How a Good Day at the Lake Usually Goes
Lake Junaluska works best when you treat it as a full morning or a full afternoon rather than a quick stop. The 3.8-mile paved loop around the lake is the main draw, but the grounds hold enough variety that you can spend several hours without covering the same ground twice.
Most people start with the walking trail. It is flat, paved, and wide enough for strollers and wheelchairs. The west side of the loop opens up to broad mountain views. The east side passes through quieter, shaded sections near the gardens. If you are walking with young children, plan about 90 minutes for the full loop with stops.
The Rose Walk is best from May through June when the blooms are at their peak. Inspiration Point, about halfway around the trail, has stone seating and a clear sightline across the water. The Junaluska Cross, near the far end, lights up in the evening and makes for a good turnaround point if you do not want to complete the full loop.
Where Eating Fits In
Crepe & Custard sits along the trail near the Welcome Center, which makes it a natural stopping point whether you are starting out, finishing up, or splitting the walk in two. The covered porch has tables that face the water, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating.
For a morning visit, the breakfast crepes pair well with coffee before or after the walk. For an afternoon visit, the savory crepes and soups serve as a solid lunch, and the frozen custard works as either a midday break or a reward at the end.
Families with children tend to stop partway through the walk, eat, and then finish the loop. Couples often walk the full trail first and then sit down for a longer meal afterward.
Other Things Worth Knowing
Lake Junaluska operates as a conference and retreat center, so the grounds are well maintained year-round. Parking is free. Public restrooms are available along the trail. Kayaking and paddleboarding are available in season.
Downtown Waynesville is five minutes away by car if you want to extend the day. The two pair well together: a morning at the lake and an afternoon browsing Main Street, or the reverse.
The Crepe and Custard Cafe is at 55 Memory Lane, Lake Junaluska.
Crepe and Custard is more than just a meal, it’s part of the experience.
